Display Energy Certificates or DECs
These are currently mandatory for all public buildings over 1000 m2 which are visited by the public.
They can be used by commercial building occupiers to ensure that they are managing their building and its services efficiently.
The building is compared with a similar building so that a fair comparision can be made.
Unlike an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which gives a theoretical efficiency for the building a DEC gives a true comparison. A building with a good EPC asset rating might have a poor DEC operational rating!
A DEC is renewed each year so that a year on year comparision is made and the effect of any improvements can be tracked.
